Akikusa (Autumn Grasses) ō-natsume by Nakamura Sōetsu

This elegant Japanese natsume (tea caddy) is a refined example of traditional urushi lacquerware, executed with subtle maki-e decoration of autumn grasses and flowers, known as akikusa (秋草).

Motif

What immediately stands out is the warm, dark brown lacquer layer. This is slightly translucent, allowing the natural wood grain to remain subtly visible. This creates a soft sheen and a sense of depth that changes beautifully with the light. The interplay between lacquer and wood gives the object a tranquil, organic appearance.
